General Tips for Your Office or Home Alarm System

  • If you have recently installed an ADSL line, you should install a Pots filter to ensure that you do not compromise your alarm systems' communication with ADT. Pots filters are available from Telkom.
  • If you have no funds on your pre-paid Telkom line, we will not receive communication from your alarm system panel. Remember that the phone will store all alarm signals generated during the time that there were no funds and these will all be deducted from your available funds once it's loaded on your phone.
  • Your Telkom bill will reflect the number of signals received by ADT every month. Every time your alarm signals, it generates a telephone call to our control room. These calls will show as 0860 ShareCall numbers.
  • Alarm systems that are not well maintained may become unstable under certain conditions and build up substantial telephone bills if signals are continuously transmitted. It is therefore critical that you ensure your burglar alarm system is well maintained and frequently tested.

Other factors which could affect communication from your alarm system with ADT

  • If your telephone line is disconnected due to non-payment
  • Barring of phones for ShareCall numbers
  • Renovations and/or phone line maintenance
  • Physical disconnection of your telephone
  • Software or hardware failure on the alarm system or the digital communicator itself, especially during a power failure/low-battery and lightning conditions
  • Certain ancillary Telkom services like: CallCatcher, BlockCall, PABX Barring, ISDN [Integrated Services Digital Network], ADSL, etc.
These services affect telephone lines only and have no effect on radio transmitters.
  • Radio signal failure due to electronic failure, physical or signal interference.
  • Overloading of telephone line with more than two electronic devices. Please contact Telkom for assistance regarding testing your telephone line's tolerance of the devices connected to it.

If you signed up for telephone and radio monitoring and/or armed response and there was no telephone line installed at the time of installation, please notify us as soon as it's been installed in order for us to link your burglar alarm system to the telephone line.
