Possible gang of suspects in Midrand

Posted: 8 February 2010

The home of a Midrand resident has once again been targeted by a gang of suspects believed to be operating in the area.

The first incident occurred on Saturday 5 December 2009. ADT Security was called out to an incident of house robbery at the premises. Three intruders had got into the house in the late afternoon and assaulted the domestic worker. The owners were away at the time. The domestic saw the suspects in the garden before they managed to get into the house and phoned her employer. He then contacted ADT’s control room requesting a response vehicle. As the vehicle arrived one of the suspects came out of the gate and walked up to the vehicle and shot the ADT reaction officer. He was joined by his fellow suspects and they again shot the Reaction Officer. The suspects then fled after taking the officer’s firearm. The officer suffered seven gunshot wounds and tragically died in hospital approximately an hour later.

This year it is suspected that the same suspects have returned. On the 3 January at about 19:30 three black men entered the property again by forcing their way through the front gate. The homeowners neighbour fortunately noticed a suspicious car in front of the property and phoned the homeowner who was at home at the time. When he opened the door he saw the suspects approaching the home and immediately notified ADT. The suspects fled in a white/silver Opel Car.

“We are so thankful that ADT responded so quickly once again and were so kind in providing my family and domestic staff with trauma counseling the following day. The two incidents have really highlighted a weakness in our perimeter security and we will certainly be addressing this,” said the resident.

Roy Rawlins. Managing director of ADT Johannesburg says Perimeter security is really the first line of defense a homeowner has again possible intrusion and we strongly recommend all clients review this aspect of their security. “It is always far more dangerous for a homeowner if the suspects have gained access to the property and one can never be sure if they are armed or not. ADT provide a free security assessment to homeowners who may be concerned about their property,” he concludes.
