Protect Yourself and Your Family Against Crime:
As the Jewish community prepares itself this month to celebrate Hoshanah Rabbah, Shemini Atzeret and Simchas Torah, please keep the safety of yourself and your family top of mind.
At this special time of the year there are several handy tips to bear in mind, which can help alleviate any risk posed to your family and property during this time.
Speaking to Graham Boys, Managing Director of ADT East Boys says there are some simple precautions residents can keep in mind." When leaving your home for Shul on Shabbat for example, make sure you close all of your curtains and leave a light on above your front door so that if it is dark upon your return, you are able to get in easily without having to fumble with your keys," he says.
- Boys recommends people always walk in groups of three or more and don't carry any valuables with them. "Watches and jewellery should be left at home. When used properly, defence sprays such as pepper spray and mace, can also significantly improve your chances of escaping or minimising dangerous situations involving attackers and assailants. These can be carried in areas with Eruv and if you are worried about carrying something that is not necessary for Shabbos, this concern should be referred to your local Rabbi for clarification."
- Boys adds that," You should check that you're not being followed on your way to Shul and back and be aware of anything that is out of place when entering your home. If something is amiss, your private security company or the SAPS should be contacted immediately."
- "In order to reduce the risk of having someone attack you on your return, you should always keep your verge clear and make sure shrubs and trees are neatly trimmed so they don't obscure entrances and windows. These are prime hiding places for criminals."
- Boys confirms that ADT will be especially vigilant during this period and where possible will be arranging Meet and Greet and escort services for clients within certain Localised Security Scheme (LSS) areas. "We would like to wish all of our Jewish clients A Chag Kasher V'Sameach," concludes Boys.
