A private security officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
Fidelity ADT Security Officer, Philani Ngidi, was on patrol in Lambert Road recently when he spotted a suspect jumping over a wall into a property. Officer Ngidi immediately pressed his panic button to notify armed response and gave chase.
“All our Fidelity security guards have access to our armed response vehicles in case of emergencies. By activating their panic button, armed response backup is immediately deployed,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Ivan Govender.
Officer Ngidi cleared the wall and successfully apprehended the suspect. Further investigation revealed that the property was under construction which may have been a temptation to the suspect. “Criminals are opportunists and it is very likely that he was hoping to find loose items that he might have been able to grab and flee with easily,” adds Govender.
The suspect was handed over for arrest to members of the Berea South African Police Service (SAPS).
“We are proud of Philani’s vigilance and dedication. He has been involved in this area for some time now, and has truly become an integral part of the community. He not only does an excellent job as a security officer but has also been involved in several local crime awareness campaigns. This is a true reflection of the value that a localised foot patrol guard can add to the overall safety of a community,” concluded Govender.
