Thanks to the actions of a patrolling Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) officer, Hermanus police have successfully taken three suspects into custody. The suspects were found with clothing allegedly stolen from a shop in Hermanus. HPP is staffed and managed by Fidelity ADT.
HPP officer Thulani Marwangana, on patrol, noticed a homeless person close to the taxi rank on the morning of Friday 21 July. The suspect was pushing a trolley containing plastic bags filled with brand new clothing – tags still attached.
“Officer Thulani Marwangana asked the suspect to explain where he found the items of clothing. The suspect informed him that it belonged to two of his friends, and that they were at an open field close to Groblaar Hall,” says Marius Boshoff, Hermanus branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
Reaching the open field, officer Marwangana found the two homeless people. Tags on the clothing held contact details pointing to a nearby shop.
“When our monitoring centre contacted the number on the tags, they spoke to a shop owner who explained that her shop had been burgled the night before and that clothing worth around R55 000 had been stolen. Our officer accompanied the three suspects back to her shop, where the owner positively identified the items of clothing as being some of the items that had been stolen from her shop,” says Boshoff.
Hermanus SAPS were called to the shop. They arrested the three suspects on a charge of being in possession of stolen property. The value of the items recovered was around R12 160.
