Residents of George should make sure their home security systems are tested often and working effectively. The warning comes from security service provider Fidelity ADT, in the wake of what they say appears to be a new crime trend observed in the area.
“We responded to a panic alarm signal from a home in Lawaaikamp a few days ago, and found that one of the bathroom windows had been removed. While talking to the home owner about what had transpired, our armed response officer, Siyabonga Lingani noticed a suspect running from the property whom he was able to apprehend and hand over into police custody,” says Pieter Meiring, Fidelity ADT’s branch manager for the Garden Route.
The company has recently received numerous reports of suspects trying to gain access to properties by removing windows, he says.
“It makes it more important than ever before to make sure your home security system is effective and tested. Outdoor beams have been proven particularly effective in providing another layer of protection.
“We use an auto-dispatch system which alerts the armed response officer closest to any incident to respond, saving valuable time. That is why we ask people to always arm their alarm systems – even when they are at home – so that we can respond as quickly as possible, and help drive crime out of George,” says Meiring.
