The Margate South African Police Service (SAPS) recently took custody of a shoplifter thanks to the rapid response and vigilance of a local security company.
The Fidelity ADT Security Monitoring Centre received a panic alarm activation from a shop in a Margate shopping mall and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Sibusiso Dlezi, who arrived at the centre within minutes.
The shop owner explained that shortly after opening his store for the morning he witnessed two suspects stealing from his shop. ARO Dlezi obtained a description of the suspects from the store owner and immediately conducted a patrol in the area to search for the culprits. He soon spotted the two suspects at a different shopping mall down the road from where the incident took place. ARO Dlezi acted swiftly and managed to apprehend one of the suspects and was able to retrieve the stolen goods.
The thief was handed over for arrest to members of the Margate SAPS and the stolen goods were returned to the store owner.
Vaughan Pillay, District Manager for Fidelity ADT KwaZulu-Natal, praised ARO Dlezi for his swift response and bravery. “I am proud of ARO Dlezi’s quick response which ensured that another criminal has now been placed behind bars.”
Pillay encouraged both the public and business owners to be extra vigilant, especially during opening and closing times. “Criminals are opportunistic and often look to target shops and businesses during vulnerable periods such as opening and closing times. We have seen an increase in security technologies being implemented at various businesses across the South Coast, especially due to the fact that CCTV solutions and other technologies have become a lot more affordable. Contact your security company to conduct a thorough security assessment and to ensure that you are adequately secured,” concluded Pillay.
