The Margate South African Police Service (SAPS) recently took custody of a thief thanks to the rapid response of a local security company.
The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre received a call from a Marine Drive store owner advising that a man, armed with a knife, was stealing items from his shop. Armed Response Officer (ARO), Sakhile Ncama, was immediately dispatched and arrived at the Margate store within minutes.
“In line with regulations to control and prevent the spread of the coronavirus we have provided all our staff with the necessary PPE equipment to ensure the safety of both our employees and customers,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
Upon arrival, ARO Ncama carefully made his way to the back of the store and successfully apprehended the armed suspect. The man was searched and several stolen goods were found in his backpack. The local authorities were contacted and the suspect was handed over for arrest. The stolen goods were returned to the store owner
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate officer Ncama for his quick response, bravery and for successfully apprehending the suspect. I would also like to commend the shop owner for handling the situation in such an efficient manner. This most likely contributed greatly to the fact that the suspect was successfully apprehended without any damages, injuries or worse,” said Pillay.
Pillay encouraged both the public and business owners to be extra vigilant, especially during opening and closing times. “Criminals are opportunistic and often look to target shops and businesses during vulnerable periods such as opening and closing times. We have seen an increase in security technologies being implemented at various businesses due to the fact that CCTV solutions and other technologies have become a lot more affordable. Contact your security company to conduct a thorough security assessment to ensure that you are adequately secured,” concluded Pillay.
