Hermanus should be proud of its hard-working and dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to keep the town safe. So says Marius Boshoff, Hermanus branch manager for Fidelity ADT in response to recent arrests in town.
“The secret to keeping any town safe is to have members of the police, security agencies and neighborhood watches, who work seamlessly together and use the best of modern technology to keep people safe from crime and criminals.”
Boshoff’s comments come in the wake of recent incidents in and around town.
In the early morning hours of Sunday 16 February 2020, the CCTV camera operators at Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) noticed a man walking home along a deserted road. When they saw that he was being followed by three other men, their suspicions were raised.
“Our operators kept monitoring events while also alerting local authorities to respond. They observed how the three robbed the first man that was noticed, and ran away. Responding authorities were able to locate and apprehend one of the three alleged suspects but the robbery victim declined to press charges. The suspect was however still taken into custody after a search led to the discovery of mandrax tablets in his possession,” says Boshoff.
Two days later, the HPP operators were again called into action when they spotted suspicious behavior in the early morning hours.
“The CCTV operators saw what appeared to be two men trying to steal petrol from a parked car. Local HPP officers were alerted to make their way to the scene, where they encountered the suspects trying to pour the allegedly stolen petrol into their own car’s tank and to push start the vehicle,” says Boshoff.
Two HPP officers pretended to be offering assistance to the alleged suspects, in order to keep them under observation while other colleagues made their way to the scene. Attempts to get the car moving failed and the suspects made their way to a local pub.
“Our officers followed them to this pub, and waited outside until members of the SAPS and the local neighborhood watch arrived. The group then went inside the pub where the two suspects were located and promptly arrested.
“We are proud of our relationship with HPP and the hard work done by them. I call on all residents of Hermanus to work with the SAPS, the HPP team and other local security role-players in keeping our town safe and secure,” says Boshoff.
