The Lotus Park South African Police Service (SAPS) recently took custody of two shoplifters thanks to the rapid response of a local security company.
The Fidelity ADT Security Monitoring Centre received a panic alarm activation from a grocery store in Lotus Park and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Sibonelo Ngcobo, who arrived at the Egret Crescent store within minutes.
“Staff at the grocery store noticed two suspects stealing goods off the shelves but were too afraid to approach the culprits and wisely decided to notify our Fidelity ADT team to assist with the matter,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
“All our ARO’s are equipped with in-vehicle tablet devices which enable them to receive auto dispatch signals as soon as a customer’s alarm is activated, enhancing response times. In any emergency situation we are all aware that time is of the essence and we therefore ensure that all our responses are done in an effective and efficient manner,” added Pillay.
Upon arrival, ARO Ngcobo acquired the necessary information from the staff members and immediately proceeded to the suspects in question. He requested that they empty their pockets which revealed several hidden items that they were not planning on paying for, confirming that they had in fact attempted to steal from the shop.
The local authorities were contacted and both suspects were handed over for arrest. The stolen goods were returned to the store owner.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate officer Ngcobo for his quick response, bravery and for successfully apprehending both suspects. He has shown wonderful promise since being employed at Fidelity ADT and occasionally assists with supervisor duties which entails additional responsibilities. He certainly has a bright future ahead of him as one can see by his work ethic. I would also like to commend the shop owner and his staff for handling the situation in such a calm and efficient manner. This most likely contributed greatly to the fact that the suspects were successfully apprehended without any damages, injuries or worse,” said Pillay.
Pillay encouraged both the public and business owners to be extra vigilant, especially during opening and closing times. “Criminals are opportunistic and often look to target shops and businesses during vulnerable periods such as opening and closing times. We have seen an increase in security technologies being implemented at various businesses due to the fact that CCTV solutions and other technologies have become a lot more affordable. Contact your security company to conduct a thorough security assessment to ensure that you are adequately secured,” concluded Pillay.
