A Pinetown thief has been apprehended by a specialised response unit officer who works for a private security company operating in the area.
Armed Response Officer (ARO), Thabani Nzuza is an employee of Fidelity ADT and was responsible for apprehending the trespassing suspect. The company delivers an essential service to members of the South African public and has been given permission to continue with their services as per usual.
“The private security industry has been classified as an essential service as we need to ensure the safety of the public as well as assist authorities during these difficult times. We have been able to operate without any restrictions and it has been business as usual for our operational teams, allowing us to respond to alarm activations while continuing to make arrests,” says Fidelity ADT’s district manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
Officer Nzuza responded to an alarm activation in Glenugie Road, New Germany at approximately 08:00 am, after a notification was received by Fidelity ADT’s control room. He managed to arrive at the property within minutes and used his skills to assess and react in such a way that the trespasser was apprehended before he could get away.
Nzuza caught the thief while attempting to escape over a section of the front wall following a swift and thorough surveillance from the officer.
“The officer forms part of a specialised response unit which we have added to our Durban operations team. This is a team of specially trained officers with the ability to identify and address crime trends in a specific area. They are not concentrated on one particular footprint but rather deployed in suburbs with high criminal activity” Pillay added.
The customer identified the stolen items found in the suspect’s possession as his property and was advised to open a case with the Pinetown SAPS who arrived at the scene to make the arrest. Upon further investigation it was found that the suspect had broken into an outdoor building by opening a window to gain access and stole several items of clothing.
“We are incredibly proud of the excellent work conducted by officer Nzuza and that he managed to place another criminal behind bars. These are uncertain times and we realise that we have a huge responsibility in keeping our residents safe during the lockdown period. Safety is one of the main priorities throughout our country and this is especially evident when families are at home due to the current situation.” Pillay concluded.
