A private security officer has been praised for his quick response which led to the arrest of an intruder. The suspect is now in police custody.
The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre received an alarm signal from a Newlands home and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Kevin Govender, who arrived at the Jack Castle Road property within minutes.
“All our ARO’s are equipped with tablet devices which enable them to receive auto dispatch signals as soon as a customer’s alarm is activated, enhancing response times. In emergency situations such as these, we are all aware that time is of the essence and we therefore ensure that all our responses are done in an effective and efficient manner,” says Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
Upon arrival, ARO Govender suspicions were raised when he noticed that the roof tiles had been tampered with. The homeowner arrived to allow ARO Govender access onto the property and unlocked the house so that an internal check could be conducted. ARO Govender soon spotted a suspect inside the house and the suspect tried to assault him with a large stick in an attempt to get away. ARO Govender managed to safely and successfully apprehend the suspect and handed him over for arrest to members of the Newlands South African Police Service (SAPS). Further investigation confirmed that the suspect had removed several roof tiles to gain access into the home.
“I would like to commend ARO Govender for his swift response and bravery. Thanks to his quick response no one was injured and another criminal has been placed behind bars. I encourage the community to consider installing ceiling detectors in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals,” concluded Pillay.
