Port Elizabeth’s Community Information Centre (CIC) again proved its worth recently, when it coordinated a response to an alleged theft of a hospital bed in the suburb of Mt Croix.
“We helped set up the CIC to act as a central point of contact for all municipal and emergency calls in the greater Port Elizabeth. The CIC operators are based at our offices, from where they monitor CCTV cameras and other community communication platforms in order to dispatch whatever assistance might be required,” explains Ryan Britz, Port Elizabeth branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
The CIC recently monitored a message from the Mount Croix Neighbourhood Watch describing a suspect that had allegedly stolen a bed from the local provincial hospital. An armed response officer was dispatched to respond.
“The CIC monitoring team was able to provide a detailed description of the alleged suspect, who was spotted when our officer arrived in the area. Two hospital security guards were in pursuit of the suspect,” says Britz.
The suspect was apprehended and handed over into police custody.
“Well done to everyone who worked together to assist in this arrest. I am relieved that someone who chose to steal a hospital bed during these times, when we should be supporting our medical healthcare professionals, was successfully apprehended,” says Britz.
