Famous for its scenic routes, Hermanus is known as a “bucket-list” destination for tourists visiting the Western Cape.
On Thursday 6 February, the Hermanus Public Protection (H.P.P. – a division staffed and managed by Fidelity ADT Security) reported that a couple who were sight-seeing in the area, had been mugged.
With the use of a two-way radio communicator, foot patrol supervisor Thulani Marwanquana fortunately witnessed the incident and quickly called in for assistance. HPP vehicle supervisor Sam Xhonywa received the radio report and assisted Marwanquana, in pursuit of the suspect.
A chase pursued along the curved path in Westcliff, resulting in the effective apprehension of the suspect. SAPS members arrived on the scene and recovered stolen money and a sharp knife, in the possession of the suspect.
“It is important to retain the sense of safety found in these areas. It is also important to always be aware of your surroundings. Well done to the officers who assisted in this case and in so doing, displayed immense bravery and commitment,” said Fidelity ADT’s Branch Manager for Hermanus, Marius Boshoff.
All parties were escorted to the local police station where the tourists were able to positively identify the assailant, who was later arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, Boshoff concludes.
