A suspect was arrested in Sedgefield with a large quantity of drugs in his possession. The arrest follows the proactive action of a patrolling private security officer, whose attention was grabbed by the suspect’s suspicious behaviour.
“Armed response officer Bandile Smith was on patrol when he noticed a man carrying a large black bag. Something about the situation seemed out of place, and our officer stopped the man to question him,” says Steven Green, Garden Route branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
“The suspect seemed to be very evasive following the questions from our officer. He politely asked the suspect what he was carrying after which the suspect refused to answer and cooperate. After a long discussion the suspect finally handed over the black bag which was found to be full of marijuana.”
Officer Smith immediately contacted the Fidelity ADT monitoring centre who notified the SAPS. The authorities arrived a few minutes later and the suspect was arrested.
“The use of illegal substances is a national concern and this incident has shown that the problem does not escape smaller towns such as Sedgefield. It is important that both private security companies and all other authorities do everything they can to address and solve the problem of drug use,” says Green.
