At around 14:30 on 21 May a suspect broke into a property in Auckland Avenue, Auckland Park. He climbed over the wall and used a chisel to remove a window. He then opened a door. He also forced open the door of a cottage on the premises. He attempted to steal clothing, cash, jewellery, a camera, and laptop amongst other items.
The alarm had been triggered when he entered the property and Fidelity ADT were alerted. Reaction Officer Msizi Shabalala was dispatched to the scene. As he arrived, the owner also arrived at the premises along with several staff members. They all spotted the suspect who had climbed onto the roof. As the suspect saw them, he started jumping across rooftops of neighbouring houses to try and escape.
Fortunately, Officer Shabalala, the owner and others managed to catch the suspect before he could flee. All the stolen items were returned and the suspect was handed over to the Brixton SAPS.
“We are so pleased that this suspect was caught and arrested,” says Natasha Springfield, Community Development Manager Fidelity ADT. “It was a great team effort as the suspect made every attempt to escape. The fact that he didn’t get away and that the goods were recovered sends a strong message that crime will not be tolerated in this community,” she says.
She urges all residents to check their security systems regularly and to check their perimeter security for any vulnerable areas. “Call in the experts if you need advice,” she concludes.
