A local security officer has been praised for his quick response which prevented a fire from spreading at a Westville North home.
The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre recently received a panic signal from a home in Westville North after a resident smelt smoke coming from his roof. They immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Siyabonga Miya who arrived at the property within minutes.
“All our ARO’s are equipped with PTT (Push-to-talk) devices which enable them to receive auto dispatch signals as soon as a client’s alarm is activated, enhancing response times. In emergency situations such as these, we are all aware that time is of the essence and we therefore ensure that all our responses are done in an effective and efficient manner. All our ARO’s are trained and equipped to deal with any type of emergency, including fire and medical emergencies,” says District Manager for Fidelity ADT KwaZulu-Natal, Ivan Govender.
Upon arrival ARO Miya ensured that the family were safe and then made his way to the top of the roof in order to assess the situation. He managed to remove a few roof tiles which gave him enough room to use the fire extinguisher to put out the fire quickly before it had a chance to spread.
“I am proud of the officer’s rapid response and courageousness which ensured that nobody was hurt and that the fire did not spread to the rest of the house,” said Govender.
Govender said that there are a number of precautions that can be taken to prevent a fire in your home. “Check for hot spots in your home; these are hazardous areas that can initiate a fire such as faulty wiring or gas leaks in the kitchen. Do not overload power points or run electrical cords under carpets.”
He added that smoke alarms play an important role in fire protection. “If you already have these installed, regularly check the batteries and that the unit itself is working properly.”
