A private security officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
Armed Response Officer (ARO), Landwick Vilakazi was on patrol in the Westville North area when he noticed a sliding door had been removed and the burglar bar sliding gate had been damaged and pushed in at a Kinloch Avenue home.
Although the home was not monitored by Fidelity ADT, ARO Vilakazi instantly pulled over to investigate. “We are here to serve the greater community and not just our own customer base. In this case the customer belonged to another service provider which didn’t stop our officer from investigating the matter,” said Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
ARO Vilakazi spotted a suspect leaving the home that he had just broken into and swiftly apprehended the suspect before he could escape. The suspect was handed over for arrest to members of the local South African Police Service (SAPS) and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) who arrived on scene.
“Our officers are trained and equipped to look out for anything out of the ordinary or suspicious when they are conducting their patrols. The idea is to have a visible presence in a footprint and not just sit back and wait for alarm activations,” added Pillay.
Pillay commended Officer Vilakazi for his vigilance and bravery which resulted in another criminal being placed behind bars. “Officers are often the unsung heroes of society and regularly go beyond the call of duty to keep our neighbourhoods safe. I encourage the community to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals,” concluded Pillay.
