A private security officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
Whilst on routine patrol in Kloof, Fidelity ADT Security Officer, Dumisani Ndlanzi, noticed a suspicious individual carrying a white bag and immediately contacted the Fidelity ADT control room to notify them and requested an armed response vehicle to investigate what the individual was carrying in the bag.
“Our officers are trained and equipped to look out for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
Officer Ndlanzi then proceeded a short distance with his patrol and on his way back up the road discovered that the suspect had disappeared. Officer Ndlanzi immediately started searching for the suspect and soon found the white bag that he had been carrying, lying in a driveway in Winston Road.
“Officer Ndlanzi made contact with the resident from the home to check on their property after discovering the white bag and hearing their dog barking incessantly in their yard. Fortunately it was confirmed that everything was in order,” says Pillay.
The Fidelity ADT armed response officer soon arrived and confirmed that he would patrol the area in search of the suspect.
A short while later, Officer Ndlanzi noticed the same suspect attempting to jump over the fence from a different home in the same road and as the earlier incident. He immediately informed all role players which lead to a collaborative search by Fidelity ADT and the local neighbourhood watch.
The suspect was successfully apprehended in Elizabeth Avenue with an array of stolen goods in his possession, including: two laptops, a DVD player and a Samsung cell phone.
The suspect was handed over for arrest to members of the Kloof South African Police Service (SAPS) and the stolen goods were returned to their rightful owners.
“I would like to commend Officer Ndlanzi for his vigilance and bravery which resulted in another criminal being placed behind bars. I encourage the community to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals,” concluded Pillay.
