A shoplifter is in police custody after recently trying to steal an expensive pair of sunglasses. Little did the suspect know that an off duty manager for a private security company was within close proximity.
Jason Botes (Fidelity ADT’s guarding manager) was doing shopping in the Hermanus CBD on Saturday (14 July) when he heard a commotion behind one of the shops close by. He went to investigate and found a well-known suspect in an altercation with a member of the public.
“Jason responded very quickly and intervened in the physical confrontation between the two men, and apprehended the suspect. It was only after the apprehension that a pair of sunglasses to the value of R3000 was found on the suspect. SAPS soon arrived to take the suspect into custody, explains Marius Boshoff, Hermanus branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
“Our managers are very involved with our on the ground operations and are well aware of all the suspects in the area. The familiarity with the operational departments’ day-to-day activities allowed Jason to react quickly, effectively and without fear. Fidelity ADT would like to commend him for going beyond the call of duty, and for showing true bravery in a difficult situation.”
Boshoff urges residents to never confront suspects as it could lead to serious consequences, and to rather leave it to the trained professionals.
“Shop owners are encouraged to make sure that they belong to a reliable and SAIDSA accredited security service provider, who they can notify if they see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. The key is to be proactive when it comes to security and to take the necessary precautions,” says Boshoff.
