A suspect was arrested in North End recently after allegedly stealing several items from a local shop. He was apprehended by an armed response officer, who responded to an alarm signal and found the alleged suspect still on the scene.
“We received the alarm signal from the shop on St Pauls Road in the early morning hours and dispatched Felix Hallam to investigate. We use an auto-dispatch system which speeds up our response time because the officer closest to an alarm signal receives an automatic alert about the signal,” explains Johan du Preez, East London branch manager at Fidelity ADT.
When officer Hallam arrived at the address, he was unable to see any broken windows or any obvious signs that a crime had been committed. He was walking back to his vehicle when he saw a nervous looking person sitting close to a nearby trailer. Considering that this was just after midnight, the officer immediately became very suspicious.
“Our officer approached this unidentified person and questioned him. On closer observation, the officer saw a bag containing a car battery and a quantity of scrap metal. The suspect could not give any plausible explanation why he had these items in his possession and tried to run away, but our officer gave chase and apprehended him” says Du Preez.
The suspect was handed over into police custody. The owner of a shop next door to where the alarm was triggered, positively identified the allegedly stolen items as his property.
“Well done to officer Hallam for following his training to the tee. He trusted his instinct and made sure this suspect ended up behind bars, where he belongs.
“I remind business owners in East London to test their security systems as regularly as possible, to make sure that you identify any system errors and have it repaired,” says Du Preez.
