A suspect is in police custody after he was caught allegedly trespassing at a school in Mdantsane recently.
Fidelity ADT armed response officer Simthembile Selana was dispatched to an alarm activation at a local junior Primary school (just before midnight, on Saturday 21 April 2018). “The office was notified via his push-to-talk (PTT) device, which allows officers to be automatically dispatched as soon as an alarm is activated in the area they patrol,” says Johan du Preez, East London branch manager for Fidelity ADT.
When the officer arrived at the school, he conducted a perimeter inspection for any signs of suspicious activity. He noticed an open window and what looked like movement inside the building, and immediately called for backup.
“As soon as his backup arrived, our officer entered the property and quickly located an unidentified suspect who tried to flee. The suspect was apprehended, and handed over into police custody. We are delighted with the excellent service from officer Selana and commend him for his bravery and commitment. These officers are often the unsung heroes of our society and play an integral part in keeping the streets of East London safe and secure. We encourage all institutions such as schools, places of worship and small businesses to ensure that all windows and doors are closed and locked after hours or on weekends. This suspect saw an opportunity in an open window, which could have been avoided,” Du Preez added.
