A private security officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
Whilst on routine midnight patrols, Fidelity ADT officer, Christian Cele, noticed a suspicious individual pushing a wheelbarrow along the R102 in Umtentweni and pulled over to investigate.
“Our officers are trained and equipped to look out for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
Officer Cele contacted the Fidelity ADT control room to notify them of the suspicious person and requested backup as a precautionary measure. The suspect was questioned regarding the items he was carrying in the wheelbarrow, where he had obtained them from and why he was walking along the road at an unusual time. The suspect could not provide any concrete answers and became increasingly nervous.
The suspect then admitted to stealing the items from a nearby property earlier in the evening and was apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the Port Shepstone South African Police Service (SAPS).
Several stolen items including copper piping, small iron rods and a compressor were handed over to the SAPS.
“I would like to commend Officer Cele for his vigilance and bravery which resulted in another criminal being placed behind bars. Officers are often the unsung heroes of society and regularly go beyond the call of duty to keep our neighbourhoods safe. I encourage the community to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals,” concluded Pillay.
