A private security officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
Fidelity ADT officer, Thulani Mjoka, who is stationed at a customer premises in Gladys Mazibuko Road (Marriot Road) not only looks after the safety of the premises but also keeps an eye on the street and surrounding areas.
Whilst on a routine patrol at around 09h00, Officer Mjoka noticed a suspicious individual making his way into a home in a nearby street (Linden Road) and immediately proceeded to investigate further.
“Our officers are trained and equipped to look out for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. Burglaries are just as common during the day as at night. We have found that there is an even split between day and night time incidents throughout the Durban footprint. People often assume that crime only occurs at night and often become less vigilant during the day. It is critical that all residents ensure their alarm systems are activated before leaving their homes to go to work or to fetch the kids from school,” explains Fidelity ADT’s District Manager for KwaZulu-Natal, Vaughan Pillay.
On route to the premises, Officer Mjoka activated his panic button to notify the Fidelity ADT control room. “This triggers a Fidelity ADT armed response officer vehicle to be dispatched as a form of backup to the officer on the ground,” says Pillay.
As soon as the suspect noticed that the officer had spotted him, he made an attempt to get away by dropping the stolen goods to flee. Officer Mjoka acted swiftly and managed to corner the suspect in the garage. The suspect was apprehended and handed over for arrest to members of the Berea South African Police Service (SAPS).
Customer where officer Mjoka is stationed was delighted with his excellent work and praised him for his vigilance and bravery. “We are truly grateful for the peace of mind that Thulani brings to our team and to those around us. He is a great asset to Fidelity ADT and always conducts himself in a professional manner as was illustrated in the recent incident in Linden Road. We would like to thank him for always looking out for us and for his commitment to serve and protect those around him,” says Mr Alton Sincube.
Pillay commended Officer Cele for his vigilance and swift response which resulted in another criminal being placed behind bars. “Officers are often the unsung heroes of society and regularly go beyond the call of duty to keep our neighbourhoods safe. I encourage the community to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas to deter opportunistic criminals,” concluded Pillay.
