A local security officer has been praised for his vigilance and quick response which prevented a fire from spreading at a Montclair home.
Whilst on early morning patrol recently, Fidelity ADT Armed Response Officer (ARO), Christopher Dongwe noticed smoke coming from a parked vehicle inside a Montclair Road property. Officer Dongwe immediately notified the control room, who alerted the Fire Department and South African Police Services (SAPS).
“As soon as officer Dongwe pulled over to assist, he could tell that the residents were still fast asleep as there was no movement or lights on in the home. The occupants were therefore completely unaware of the danger that was occurring in their driveway.” says Fidelity ADT’s District Community Development Manager, Rian Buys.
ARO Dongwe discovered the perimeter gate was unlocked, allowing him access to the yard. He spotted a pile of sand in the vicinity and grabbed a bucket to scoop up the sand to throw onto the fire in an attempt to stop it from spreading.
Whilst the officer was running up and down to collect sand, the residents woke up due to the commotion and immediately assisted. Between the officer and the residents they managed to stop the fire before it could reach the house.
“The vehicle was parked close to the house and had the officer not intervened the fire would have most likely spread to the house. We would like to congratulate ARO Dongwe for his excellent work and for placing himself in danger in order to protect these residents,” added Buys.
The cause of the fire to the vehicle is unclear and is currently being investigated.
