A private security officer has been praised for his quick response which led to the arrest of a suspected thief. The suspect is now in police custody.
The Fidelity ADT Monitoring Centre recently received an alarm signal from a Westville home and immediately dispatched Armed Response Officer (ARO), Michael Luthuli, who arrived at the St Georges Drive property within minutes.
“All our ARO’s are equipped with PTT (Push-to-talk) devices which enable them to receive auto dispatch signals as soon as a customer’s alarm is activated, enhancing response times. In emergency situations such as these, we are all aware that time is of the essence and we therefore ensure that all our responses are done in an effective and efficient manner,” says Fidelity ADT’s District Community Development Manager, Rian Buys.
Upon arrival the ARO conducted a perimeter check and soon spotted a suspect on top of an air conditioning unit, receiving stolen items from another suspect who was inside the home. ARO Luthuli successfully apprehended the suspect outside who was handed over for arrest to members of the Westville South African Police Service (SAPS). Unfortunately the second suspect fled the scene.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects had jumped over the perimeter fence from the back of the property and had used the water pipes to climb up onto the roof. They removed the roof tiles to gain entry into the house and had broken the bedroom glass window pane to allow one of the suspects to position himself outside, on top of the air conditioning unit.
A stolen laptop and a pair of takkies were recovered from the suspect and were handed over to the SAPS.
“Break-ins via the roof are definitely an increasing modus operandi, not only in Durban but across the country. I encourage the community to conduct regular security assessments in order to resolve any vulnerable or unprotected areas in order to deter opportunistic criminals. Security technologies such as CCTV, outdoor beams and roof passives are often used to proactively prevent crime,” concluded Buys.
